In Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life there is a chapter on shitty first drafts. She sez: "The first draft is the child's draft, where you let it all pour out and then let it romp all over the place, knowing that no one is going to see it and that you can shape it later." I come here to document events, memories, unload thoughts, feelings, and observations about my life in an unedited chaotic brain dump. Odds are slim that I will re-shape anything here later. The objective is to get it out onto the electronic page. Visitor's Guide This is a journal, not a blog, not a persona-based performance piece. I write this journal for me. I love to talk and I'm always happy to meet new people and make new friends. I've met some loverly people through LJ. I hope to meet more. Be warned: I'm a big silly goose, always have been, always will be. I write in detail about interesting people I encounter in meatspace. I cover the good, the neutral, and the ugly. I'm not a good liar. I can thank my fundie Southern Baptist evangelical roots and my Dad for that. I call things like I see it. I write very critically about intra and inter-racial race relations. Most of my posts are VERY long. I like to explore the madness in the minutia and I often deviate on wild tangents. Don't worry, I practice safe live journaling. So I slip on the LJ cut for your protection and mine. Mainly mine, because I would like to see more than one journal entry per screen. Some of my posts are analytical and rant flavored. Writing about things that bother me is a therapeutic way for me to exorcise my tendency to over think. Once I put what's bothering me on the page (electronic or otherwise) I literally feel lighter. Sometimes I make discoveries or find solutions to problems that eluded me before. I'm a work in progress and journaling is one of my tools. I don't mind adding if you have a real journal and write about yourself. Please holla when you do because I don't check my profile page often. Commentary is welcome but not required. I find LJ is an interesting way to have instant pen pals. Let me know what's up with you and I'll do the same. Werds I Like When someone shows you who they are, believe them...the first time. Maya Angelou Well-behaved women seldom make history. Laurel Thatcher Ullrich Practice is the best of all instruction---Aristotle Good words for a yoga, martial arts or creative practice. The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.-----Albert Einstein. The Litany Against Fear from Frank Herbert's Dune I will not fear. Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death that bring total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. When the fear has gone past, I will turn my inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain. The Litany Against Fear is my Life Mantra Moral certainty is always a sign of cultural inferiority. The more uncivilized the man, the surer he is that he knows precisely what is right and what is wrong. All human progress, even in morals, has been the work of men who have doubted the current moral values, not of men who have whooped them up and tried to enforce them. The truly civilized man is always skeptical and tolerant, in this field as in all others. His culture is based on 'I am not too sure.' H. L. Mencken | |
